Chardonnays from across the state. The winemakers featured for this article were selected as producing the finest currently available Chardonnays from each of the broadly defined winemaking regions: Long Island, the Hudson River Region, the Finger Lakes, and Lake Erie and Niagara Escarpment region. Only wines made from grapes grown and vinified in the state were considered. Given that the Chardonnay grape, probably more than any other varietal, takes much of its character from the terroir of the region from which it is produced, focus was particularly on estate bottlings or at least wines grown and made in the same region. With very few exceptions, wines had to readily available in New York City or online from the winery's website.
