Long Island Merlot 2008

Merlot is becoming the signature red varietal of Long Island winemakers. The grape ripens earlier than most other Bordeaux red wine types, making it ideal for the cooler maritime climate of the East End. The climate allows Long Island Merlot, through more gradual ripening, to express distinctive fruit traits and develop rich complexity without the flab seen in warmer regions. Hamptons and North Fork Merlots manifest lovely pepper and spice developing interest and balance without the need for Cabernet Sauvignon to provide strength.
