Colors of garnet and brick show in the glass on this North Fork appellation red blend. The wine is composed of 72.6% Merlot, 19.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6.4% Blaufrankisch and 1.5% Dornfelder and was aged for 20 months on about 20% new oak. Most of the grapes came from the Mudd vineyards which are some of the oldest on the island. Aromas of ripe black plum and bramble fruit with earthy contrasts of eucalyptus, tar and cedar; aromatic. Plum, raspberry, and blackberry flavors forward and developing smoke, meat, thistle, and earth mid palate. Demonstrates good complexity, balance, and earth and fruit contrasts. Solid weight with ripe and good acids but still somewhat drying tannins on a medium to full body. Finish is big with ripe black fruit and spices; tightly wound. Probably needs about five more years in the cellar to fully integrate the tannins and should drink nicely for a decade following. Too big for an aperitif. Pair with pot roasts, rich beef or lamb stews, or other types of rustic hunter’s stews.
