Pale gold in the glass on Hermann Wiemer’s estate 2007 HJW Vineyard Dry Rielsing. Extraordinarily rich bouquet shows aromas of key lime and ripe golden apples over slate undertones. Palate opens with lush stone fruit of apricots and peaches. Citrus currents creep up and provide mouthwatering balance to fruit. Medium bodied Riesling with rich lanolin textures. The wine is dry but not displaying the angularity of the 2006 vintages and demonstrates the opulence of the 2007 vintage. Although some of the Finger Lakes Rieslings are overripe, this dry holds excellent balance while reveling in the plentitude of the year. Finish is punctuated with Meyers lemon and golden apples over solid slate framework; lingering. Excellent balance presages good aging potential. Finish is just beginning to show a hint of the diesel tones that should emerge with some time in the cellar. Excellent as an aperitif. Pair with German veal dishes or Vietnamese chicken with lemongrass sauce.
